Turning Waste into Wealth: Eco-Loop Kenya’s Mission to Transform Kisumu’s Organic Waste

Published on 28 February 2025 at 13:48

This past week, Eco-Loop Kenya, in partnership with the County Government of Kisumu [City of Kisumu], embarked on a city-wide market cleanup, bringing together dedicated volunteers, local authorities, and community members to restore cleanliness in Kisumu’s major markets. As we gathered piles of waste, a startling reality became evident: the majority of the collected waste was organic, yet it was all being indiscriminately discarded at dumpsites.

In a city thriving with agricultural activity and a growing demand for sustainable solutions, it is concerning to witness such a valuable resource go to waste. Organic waste holds immense potential—it can be repurposed into compost to enrich soils, transformed into biogas for clean energy, or even converted into animal feed. Instead, it is left to rot in dumpsites, contributing to pollution, methane emissions, and a host of environmental challenges.

At Eco-Loop Kenya, we refuse to see waste as mere trash; we see opportunity, innovation, and economic empowerment. Our vision is clear—to recover, recycle, and repurpose organic waste into valuable resources that benefit both the community and the environment.

Imagine a future where market vendors no longer struggle with overflowing waste bins, where farmers have access to affordable organic fertilizers, and where households can rely on biogas instead of firewood or charcoal. This vision is not far-fetched—it is within reach, and Eco-Loop Kenya is committed to making it a reality.

Join us in this transformative journey. Together, let’s turn waste into wealth and build a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Kisumu!
